Photographer #360: Torsten Warmuth

Torsten Warmuth, 1968, is a German experimental, fine-art photographer who received a degree in Natural Science and a doctorate at the University of Kassel. In 1996, after having worked for a US mathematics software producer he decides to devote himself exclusively to photography. Within his extensive portfolio we find works using the double exposure technique. For most of his images he uses a large format camera. His series Belle de Nuit contains work surrounding Berlin's nightlife. While making this series he experimented with multiple toning, producing unique works that give the prints a heightened plastic effect which become Silver Paintings. From 2010 onwards, the produced negatives have become more of a raw material that he works on creating pictorial compositions. By hand he creates multi-toned prints on gelatin silver paper.  The following images come from the series Belle de Nuit, Against the Flow and It's a Man's World.

Photographer #352: Anne Lass

Anne Lass, 1978, Germany/Denmark, studied Communication Design at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Since 2004 she has been working on her project Wandeln. The images for the ongoing project have been taken throughout Europe, Australia and the USA. The landscape photographs constitute small stories within a larger story concerning nature as a displaced and estranged object. In her ongoing project Schwinden she documents places that are dissolving due to climate change and intense building construction on the coastal line, reflecting on the limits of our belief in the "manageability" of our natural surroundings. Anne has had a vast amount of group exhibitions throughout the world and several solo exhibitions in Germany, Danmark and the United States. She has also been featured in numerous publications. The following images come from the series Wandeln, Milwaukee Avenue and Schwinden.

Photographer #344: Martin Klimas

Martin Klimas, 1971, Germany, is a still-life photographer who captures motion. He studied Visual Communications and Photography at the Fachhochshule in Düsseldorf. In his personal work he does not use photoshop. He uses analog technology for his visually complex photographs capturing the moment between being whole and completely broken. In complete darkness he dropped porcelain figures, the sound of the objects hitting the floor triggers the lights to go off for a fraction of a second. For his work with flowers and vases he used the same technique, however it is the sound of a projectile, shot by Klimas, hitting the vase that sets off the flash. He is capable of capturing a moment we cannot see with the human eye. Even though catastrophy is happening in his large scale images, they are peaceful, silent and aesthetically beautiful. The following images come from the series FlowervasesPorcelain Figurines and Flying Birds.

Photographer #288: Anna Skladmann

Anna Skladmann, 1986, Germany, is a young documentary photographer who lives and works between New York and Moscow. She focused on several projects in Russia. Recently her book Little Adults was released, a collection of portraits of priviliged children in Russia. These Russian kids belong to the "nouveau riche" and grow up surrounded by money. They are considered to become the next elite class of the post-communist country, putting pressure on them to become achievers. In a country where the gap between rich and poor is so large, it starts to raise questions about the notion of normality. Anna photographed the children that behave like little adults in their own surroundings and clothes. The following images come from her personal series Little Adults, Sochi and Portraits.

Photographer #277: Daniel Sannwald

Daniel Sannwald, 1979, Germany, is a surreal and experimental fashion photographer. He studied at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. Daniel does not limit himself when making images, nor does he abide to the rules of photography. He might shoot digital or analogue, change his end results with photoshop or just plain scissors and glue, make a collage or add bizarre objects on the set. He might go over the top with an image and keep it simple and clean with the next. Daniel keeps all options open and decided to use all the options available. The images he produces are fantastical, often surreal and innovative. His cinematographic photographs have been published in magazines as Dazed & Confused, i-D and Vogue Homme. Recently his book Pluton & Charon was released covering fashion work from the last five years. The following images come from his portfolio.

Photographer #222: Thomas Wrede

Thomas Wrede, 1963, Germany, released his book Anywhere in 2010. It contains images of the series Real Landscapes and Seascapes. In Real Landscapes Wrede plays with reality and perspectives. The large printed images show houses or cars in idealistic yet impossible landscapes. He achieves these mind triggering results with the use of models and a large format camera. A year earlier he released the book Manhattan / Picture Worlds in which he photographs billboards in a clever way, again playing with the ratios. A dialogue evolves between the billboards and their surroundings. The following images come from the series Real Landscapes, Am Meer / Seascapes and Small Worlds.

Photographer #202: Karen Knorr

Karen Knorr, 1954, Germany, was raised in Puerto Rico. Her series India Song consists of two elements. The locations have been shot with a large format analogue camera, the live animals with a digital camera. The two images are combined to create one image that blurs our perception of reality and fiction. In her series Fables she draws our attention to animal behaviour and it's relationship to human behaviour and shortcomings. In most of the recent series by Karen, she uses museums, palaces or other cultural places as settings for her photography. The following images come from India Song, Muses and Majas and Fables (Château Chambord).

Photographer #194: Sonja Braas

Sonja Braas, 1968, Germany, lives and works in New York. In her series The Quiet of Dissolution Sonja shows us various natural catastrophes, but in a way that we have never seen before. The viewer begins to wonder how she got so close to the disasters and how she continuously get's a certain serenity in her photographs. Sonja actually builds the scenes herself in a studio as idealized models of reality. In her series You Are Here she took pictures of zoological gardens and natural science museums and put them alongside images of real landscapes. This confuses the viewer when attempting to figure out what is real and what is not. The following images come from the series The Quiet of Dissolution, Forces and You Are Here.
